Helpful Hints For Ensuring
Positive Roommate Relations
Congratulations! You've found a good
roommate match. Before moving in, however, it is helpful to first
discuss several areas, in order to minimize the possibility of any
future misunderstandings.
Schedule a time to meet with your
prospective roommate. (To ensure you both feel as comfortable as
possible, we suggest meeting in a neutral location.) Consider
these points of discussion:
1. Check each other's references
2. Move-in date
3. Rent: amount & when due
4. Utilities: amount & when due
5. Security deposit: amount & when due
6. Lease terms (be sure and obtain a copy)
7. Request receipts for payments made
8. If you are interested in
checking a potential roommates background and or credit
information, we recommend Trak-1 Technology @ www.trak-1.com
or Please call 1-888-818-5228 or 763-421-2436. Be sure to
mention that you heard about Trak-1 from Roommate Referrals.
Generally, the security deposit reserves your rental unit, and the
first month's rent is due when you move in.
Other items for roommates to discuss and
agree upon ahead of time:
1. Type of arrangement
2. Pets
3. Furniture
4. Garage & parking space
5. Laundry facilities
6. Utilities: whose name will they go under?
7. Telephone: long distance calls in particular
To ensure there are no
misunderstandings on what you've discussed, prepare a written
agreement.
Most importantly, remember:
- Communicate openly!
- Don't assume anything!
- Make decisions together!
